US Uncut unites Left & Right – Say No to Corporate Tax Dodgers

Leaders of “Americans for Prosperity” & “MoveOn.org” Agree with US Uncut

In today’s deeply divided America, there is very little agreed upon across the political spectrum, but the simple message of US Uncut against corporate tax dodging appeals to Americans of all political stripes. Both Phil Kerpen, Vice President for Policy at Americans for Prosperity, and Justin Ruben, Executive Director of MoveOn.org, recently expressed support for the goals of the US Uncut movement.

“Of course, I agree with you, corporations should pay their taxes. I am not in favor of tax deadbeats,” said Phil Kerpen of Americans for Prosperity to Ryan Clayton of US Uncut, while doing recent interviews at the Thom Hartmann Show on RT.

MoveOn.org Executive Director Justin Ruben agrees, “We support US Uncut’s message. When corporations do not pay their fair share of taxes, then we all pay the price in higher middle-class taxes and cuts in valuable public services.”

An unlikely meeting of the minds for sure, Kerpen and Ruben rarely see eye-to-eye on issues of public policy. MoveOn.org is traditionally considered a progressive left organization and has always been a leading voice calling for corporate accountability. The tea party group Americans for Prosperity is funded in large part by the now infamous conservative Koch brothers, who are waging a public relations war against progressive allies.

Additionally, progressive blogger Lee Fang from ThinkProgress.org recently interviewed two GOP Congressman at a Tea Party Patriots Policy Summit in Phoenix. Shockingly, they all agreed on US Uncut’s simple message that corporate tax dodgers should pay their fair share or “they broke the law”, in the words of Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ). See video here at ThinkProgress.org.

"It is great to see a meeting of the minds from the left and right on this issue through US Uncut’s work,” said Ryan Clayton, a spokesperson for US Uncut, “Americans are pretty darn smart. When given the facts on this one, everyone agrees – corporations should be paying their fair share of taxes, just like the rest of us.”

US Uncut is a rapidly growing grassroots movement that utilizes social media to stage public protests against corporate tax dodgers and public service cuts. Recently, they held protests in 50 cities across the country targeting Bank of America, who profited $4.4 Billion in 2009 and paid zero dollars in income taxes.

“The $3 in my wallet is more than ExxonMobil, GE and Bank of America paid in taxes last year, combined," said Carl Gibson, a spokesperson for US Uncut in Mississippi. "Because of overseas tax havens and other tax loopholes, US corporations are making profits in America but barely paying taxes here. If we close those loopholes, we wouldn't have to be cutting back on firefighters, library hours and student loans."

In response to recent push-back from a Bank of America spokesperson who said, “Our practice is to follow all relevant tax policies”, Armand Biroonak, an organizer of US Uncut DC replied directly by saying, “If Bank of America made $0 in America, then their stock price would be $0 instead of their tax bill. This should be a clear red-flag to our political leaders that someone is gaming the system.”
